Viewing Album: South Africa's Rolling Stock - 50 Number Range
By:
Col André Kritzinger
Dates:
8/19/2010 - 12/31/2020
Album Info:
Rolling stock with road numbers starting with 50 to 59 - Bulkhead Flats and Gondolas. Since the two sides of all wagon types are different, I treated the side on which the vacuum pipes are mounted, or where this was not practical, the side on which the brake wheel is mounted to the left of centre, as Side B. Further, since they describe brake systems and not wagon types, I left out the letters D, L, R, V and J in the wagon letter codes. Where applicable, the various complete letter codes and new class numbers for each wagon are included in brackets in the descriptions. The meaning of these omitted letters follow below. .....oo..oo..... D in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Vacuum Brakes. .....oo..oo..... L in position 2, 3 or 4: Air Brakes. .....oo..oo..... R in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Air Brakes. .....oo..oo..... V in position 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes. .....oo..oo..... J in position 2, 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes with Rejection Lugs on Brake Shoes. .....oo..oo..... Data Source: Transnet Index and Diagrams of Goods Vehicles, Part I, Open and Covered Wagons, Ref S/RM(WV) 15/8/5/5, Issued 91/07/30. Dimensional data last edited and updated on 19 June 2009.

SAR Class NZ (Side A) (ex DZ, Type 2)
Description:
Class NZ wagons are various types of wagons that were either purpose built or reclassified for use in non-revenue service. Unlike this one, they are usually renumbered into the 90 number range - in fact, I suspect this one's number should actually have been 94 835 969. This is a Class DZ wagon that entered service between 1936 and 1968. It is a dropside open wagon designed to transport general goods. The type 2 wagons have channel iron outside braces on their bulkheads. This one is working in a ballast cleaning train.Proper number range 94 800 006 to 94 808 376 and 94 820 007 to 94 999 997, Length between couplers 14.752m, Length over headstocks 13.868m, Length between bogie pivot centres 10.058m, Height 2.206m, Width 2.426m, Tare (average) 19,350kg, Load 44,000kg, Floor area 34m2, Capacity 31m3.
