Viewing Album: South Africa's Rolling Stock - 60 Number Range
By:
Col André Kritzinger
Dates:
10/20/2009 - 12/31/2020
Album Info:
Rolling stock with road numbers starting with 60 to 69 - Gondolas, Open Hoppers, Ballast Hoppers, Coal Tipplers and Ore Cars. Since the two sides of all wagon types are different (with two exceptions, one of them in this album), I treated the side on which the vacuum pipes are mounted, or where this was not practical, the side on which the brake wheel is mounted to the left of centre, as Side B. Further, since they describe brake systems and not wagon types, I left out the letters D, L, R, V and J in the wagon letter codes. Where applicable, the various complete letter codes and new class numbers for each wagon are included in brackets in the descriptions. The meaning of these omitted letters follow below.D in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Vacuum Brakes.L in position 2, 3 or 4: Air Brakes.R in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Air Brakes.V in position 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes.J in position 2, 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes with Rejection Lugs on Brake Shoes. Many of the Class AZ wagons were rebuilt into two new versions without being reclassified, so I sub-sorted these according to body type. Many were reclassified for unknown other reasons than body type over the years and I found it more practical to sort these according to their original as delivered class numbers. The same goes for the Class CC wagons, many of which were relettered to CG, and for many of the Class C ore wagons.Data Source: Transnet Index and Diagrams of Goods Vehicles, Part I, Open and Covered Wagons, Ref S/RM(WV) 15/8/5/5, Issued 91/07/30. Dimensional data last edited and updated on 26 June 2009.
