Album Info:
Passenger coaches and other passenger train rolling stock used in mainline service. They are being shown here in four groups: the oldies with all wooden bodies, those with the later sheathed wooden bodies, the all metal group with peaked roofs, and then the all metal modern ones with smooth rounded roofs which I have arranged in three (arbitrary and unofficial) series. Blue Train and Phelophepa coaches and the cabooses are also included. .....oo..oo..oo..... With coaches and cabooses where the two sides are rarely identical, I treated the compartment/toilet side as Side A. With baggage cars and other coaches where the two sides are virtually identical, I treated the side on which the brake wheel is mounted to the right of centre, as Side B. .....oo..oo..oo..... SAR Sitter Coach (Series 3-4, Side A)
Description:
This sitter coach (a PC title for 4th Class) is painted in the Shosholoza Meyl livery. It has eleven windows on each side and its interior layout is, from end to end, a toilet on each side, a single large open cabin, and another toilet on each side. The cabin was originally laid out in eleven back to back rows of benches, to accommodate 108 passengers. When it was rebuilt for the Shosholoza Meyl, the cabin layout was changed to eighteen rows of four airliner type seats with a centre aisle, all facing the same end of the coach, to accommodate 72 passengers. In this arrangement most of the rows of seats are not in line with windows and to call it an uncomfortable ride will be putting it mildly....SAR Type H-6, Number range 36004 to 36197, Built 1982-85, Length over headstocks 20.840m, Height 3.960m, Width 2.845m, To seat 108.

Description:
This sitter coach (a PC title for 4th Class) is painted in the Shosholoza Meyl livery. Counting from the power car, this car is seventeenth in the string of eighteen wagons that usually make up the Phelophepa Health Train. This appears to have been a third class passenger coach that was modified to be used as part of the Phelophepa train. .....oo..oo..... Phelophepa (a seSotho word for good, clean health) came into being in January 1994. The train takes much needed health care and education to rural areas within South Africa that don't have access to national health services.
