SAR Class 4M Motor Coach (Left)         
Commuter trains are usually made up of as many as 11 to 13 wagons, of which three are motor coaches, one at each end and the third in the middle of the train. These two-pantograph metal sheathed wooden motor coaches started disappearing from South African rails during the 1960s and 1970's, gradually getting replaced by all metal coaches with driver controlled sliding doors.
