SAR Class 4E E237
Description:
Between 1952 and 1954 the South African Railways placed forty Class 4E electric locomotives with a 1Co+Co1 wheel arrangement in service, numbered in the range from E219 to E258. It was designed by the General Electric Company (GEC) and built by North British Locomotive Company. The Class 4E was amongst the most powerful electric locomotives in the world at the time and was specifically built for use on the main line from Cape Town through the proposed new Hex River tunnels to Touws River, but by the time the tunnel system was eventually opened in 1989, the Class 4Es were already retired after spending their entire careers double heading trains up the old Hex River rail pass.

Description:
Between 1925 and 1945 the South African Railways placed altogether one hundred and seventy-two Class 1E electric locomotives with a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement in service, designed by Metropolitan-Vickers and spread over seven orders from four manufacturers (Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, Metropolitan-Vickers, Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns). They were the first main-line electric locomotives to be introduced in South Africa and were subclassified and numbered in seven series (Series 1 E1 to E78, Series 2 E79 to E95, Series 3 E98 to E102, Series 4 E103 to E122, Series 5 E139 to E160, Series 6 E161 to E180, and Series 7 E181 to E190). Thirty-five were later modified and reclassified to Class 1ES for use as shunter locomotives. The modifications included alteration of the resistance grids in the electrical circuit and enlarged and widened cabs.

The number range of the Series 3 locomotives do not follow directly on that of the Series 2 since the Class 5E1, Series 1 and the Class ES locomotives were allocated most of the numbers in between. The locomotives were ordered from English Electric, who subcontracted their building to Vulcan Foundry.
