Description:  In 1978 and 1979 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 7E electric locomotives with a Co-Co wheel arrangembnt in mainline service, numbered in the range from E7001 to E7100. They were the first 25 kV AC locomotives to be introduced in South Africa, built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Tuansvaal and designed by the 50 c/s Group (ACEC, AEG-Telefunken, Siemens, Alsthom-Atlantique, Société MTE and Brown Boveri). Beginning with the Class 7E, the class number was included in the running number on electric locomotives.

It was designed by the 50 c/s Group (ACEC, AEG-Telefunken, Siemens, Alsthom-Atlantique, Société MTE and Brown Boveri) and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal. The Class 7E2, Series 1 can be visually distinguished from the Series 2 by the vertical grilles just to the rear of the driver’s window on both sides on Series 2 locomotives, but absent on Series 1.

Description:  In 2011 the first ten of one hundred and forty-three Class 43-000 type GE C30ACi diesel-electric locomotives for Transnet Freight Rail were imported from the United States of America, built by GE Transportation Systems and numbered in the range from 43-001 to 43-010. The rest of the locomotives, numbered in the range from 43-011 to 43-143, were built at the Koedoespoort shops of Transnet Rail Engineering between 2011 and 2013. The C30ACi was the first AC diesel electric locomotive to be introduced in sub-Saharan Africa.

A single Class 35-600 GT18MC locomotive was also built new in 1977 for Columbus Stainless in Middelburg, Transvaal.
