Title:  SAR Class 6E1 E1392 (Series 3)
Description:  Between 1971 and 1973 the South African Railways placed one hundred and fifty Class 6E1, Series 3 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1296 to E1445. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). The fifty Series 2 and the first fifty Series 3 locomotives up to E1345 are visually indistinguishable from each other, while Series 3 numbers E1346 and up have a wider stirrup middle step below their side doors.

Title:  SAR Class 6E1 E1533 (Series 4)
Description:  In 1973 and 1974 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 4 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1446 to E1545. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). In 1978 E1525 was modified for experiments in high speed traction by re-gearing the traction motors and installing Scheffel bogies and a streamlined nose cone. In this configuration it reached a speed of 245 kilometres per hour (152 miles per hour) on 31 October 1978, a still unbeaten world speed record on Cape gauge. Apart from the narrower stirrup step below the side doors of Series 3 number E1345 and earlier locomotives, Series 3 to Series 5 locomotives are visually indistinguishable from each other.

Spoornet Class 18E 18-502 (Series 1)
Title:  Spoornet Class 18E 18-502 (Series 1)
Description:  Beginning in 2000 Spoornet embarked on a program to rebuild dual cab Class 6E1, Series 2 to Series 11 locomotives to single cab Class 18E, Series 1 locomotives that were renumbered in the ranges 18-001 to 18-434 and 18-500 to 18-525. The rebuilding included the installation of Alsthom micro-processor control technology and was done by Transwerk (later Transnet Rail Engineering and then Transnet Engineering) at its Koedoespoort shops in Pretoria, Gauteng. In the process their number 1 end cabs were stripped of all controls in order to have a toilet installed.
18-502 was rebuilt from Class 6E1, Series 7 E1808 and commissioned in 2009.

Another seven of these locomotives were built for the mining industry.

It is a more powerful version of the EMD Class 34-200, 34-600 and 34-800, designed by Electro-Motive Diesel and built by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth. They were numbered in the range from 37-001 to 37-100. In 2008 one of them, no. 37-010, was rebuilt to Class 39 prototype no. 39-251 that was tested but rejected by Transnet and later reported as sold to RRL.

Description:  In 1964 and 1965 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 5E1, Series 3 electric locomotives in service, numbered in the range from E721 to E820. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers, it was built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by Associated Electrical Industries. The distinction between series 2 and 3 locomotives appears to have been based only on the grounds of being built on different orders since they were equipped with the same AEI 281 AZX traction motors.

Description:  Between 1914 and 1925 the South African Railways placed one hundred and nineteen Class 15A steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain wheel arrangement in service, delivered in ten batches from three manufacturers (North British Locomotive Company, Beyer, Peacock and Company and J.A. Maffei). They were numbered in the ranges 1571 to 1575, 1781 to 1828, 1839 to 1858, 1961 to 1970, 2011 to 2025 and 2080 to 2100. All but five Class 15A locomotives were later reboilered with Watson Standard no. 2A boilers and reclassified to Class 15AR.

Description:  Between 1925 and 1945 the South African Railways placed altogether one hundred and seventy-two Class 1E electric locomotives in service, designed by Metropolitan-Vickers and spread over seven orders from four manufacturers (Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, Metropolitan-Vickers, Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns). They were the first main-line electric locomotives to be introduced in South Africa and were subclassified and numbered in seven series (Series 1 E1 to E78, Series 2 E79 to E95, Series 3 E98 to E102, Series 4 E103 to E122, Series 5 E139 to E160, Series 6 E161 to E180, and Series 7 E181 to E190).

Title:  SAR Class 4E E229
Description:  Between 1952 and 1954 the Soutf African Railways placed forty Class 4E electric locomotives with a 1Co+Co1 wheel arrangement in service, numbered in the range from E219 to E258. It was designed by the General Electric Company (GEC) and built by North British Locomotive Company. The Class 4E was amongst the most powerful electric locomotives in the world at the time and was specifically built for use on the main$line from Cape Town through the proposed new Hex River tunnels to Touws River, but by the time the tunnel system was eventually opened in 1989, the Class 4Es were already retired after spending their entire careers double heading trains up the old Hex River rail pass.

Description:  In 1897 and 1898 the Cape Government Railways placed a third batch of fifty-five 6th Class 4-6-0 steam locomotives in service, built by Dübs and Company and Neilson and Company, whose name changed to Neilson, Reid and Company in 1898 while they were being built. In 1907 four were sold to the Benguela Railway in Angola. In 1912, when the remaining fifty-one locomotives were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered in the range from 490 to 540 and reclassified to Class 6B. During World War II two of them were sold to the Sudan Railways.

Description:  In 1903, when the first batch of 8th Class 4-8-0 Mastodons had been tried and proven successful, the Cape Government Railways placed another thirty-eight 8th Class 4-8-0 steam locomotives in service, built by Neilson, Reid and Company and North British Locomotive Company, which was established through the amalgamation of Neilson, Reid with Dübs and Company and Sharp, Stewart and Company while the locomotives were being built. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered and reclassified to Class 8D. In the 1930s fourteen of these locomotives were equipped with superheated boilers, 20 inches (508 millimetres) bore cylinders and inside admission piston valves, and reclassified to Class 8DW.

Description:  The Class 15F was the most numerous steam locomotive class in South African Railways service. Between 1938 and 1946 two hundred and fifty-five of these steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain wheel arrangement were placed in service, built in four batches by four manufacturers (Berliner Maschinenbau, Henschel and Son, North British Locomotive Company and Beyer, Peacock and Company). They were numbered in the range from 2902 to 3156. The pre-war Class 15Fs were hand fired, but the British built locomotives were all converted to mechanical stoking by the late 1940s. The post-war locomotives were all delivered with mechanical stokers.

Description:  In 1911 the Natal Government Railways placed the first two of seven 4-6-2T Pacific narrow gauge tank steam locomotives in service. Five more were delivered to the South African Railways in 1913 and 1914. They were all built by Kerr, Stuart and Company and numbered in the range from NG10 to NG16. When a system of grouping narrow gauge locomotives into classes was eventually introduced somewhere between 1928 and 1930, they were all classified as Class NG4.

Title:  SAR Class ES E526 (Series 4)
Description:  Between 1936 and 1964 twenty-four Class ES electric shunting locomotives, based on the Class 1E mainline electric locomotive, were placed in service by the South African Railways. The first two, numbered E500 and E501 (Series 1), were built in the Pietermaritzburg shops in 1936. Series 2 in 1937 and Series 3 in 1951 were built by the Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel and were numbered in the ranges E503 to E512 and E515 to E524 respectively. In 1964 the last two, numbers E525 and E526 (Series 4), were rebuilt from Class 1E locomotives. In 1952 and 1957 four more were built new for Driefontein Consolidated Gold Mine.
E526 was rebuilt from Class 1E, Series 5 E146 and commissioned in 1964.

Beginning in 2005 three Class 39-000 EMD GT26CU-3 locomotives, numbers 39-001, 39-003 and 39-004, were rebuilt from wrecked Class 34-600 locomotives, numbers 34-635, 34-674 and 34-620 respectively.

Description:  In 1931 three narrow gauge locomotives with a 2-8-2 Mikado wheel arrangement were acquired for the Otavi Mining and Railway Company in South West Africa. Four more batches were purchased for the Otavi and for the Tsumeb Copper Corporation during the subsequent years, built by Henschel and Son and Société Franco-Belge, bringing the total number of these locomotives up to twenty-one by 1958. When the Otavi Railway was regauged to Cape gauge in 1960, all twenty-one locomotives were taken over by the South African Railways. They were classified as Class NG15, renumbered in the ranges 17 to 19, 117 to 124, 132 to 136 and 144 to 148, and transferred to the Eastern Cape for service on the Langkloof narrow gauge line where they were commonly known as Kalaharis.

Description:  Between 1966 and 1969 the South African Railways placed two hundred and twenty-five Class 5E1, Series 5 ele|tric locomotives in service, numbered in the range from E921 to E1145. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers, they were built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, with the electrical equipment supplied by Associated Electrical Industries and English Electric. The locomotive body design was changed from rounded corners to squared corners somewhere between the construction of number E941, still with rounded corners, and E948 which has squared corners.

Description:  The first ten of ninety-five 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC dual voltage Class 20E electric locomotives for Transnet Freight Rail were built in China in 2013 and 2014 by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., a subsidiary of the China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR), China's leading train manufacturer. The remaining eighty-five locomotives were built in South Africa by a consortium composed of CSR Zhuzhou and the South African Black Economic Empowerment company Matsetse Basadi. They are intended for service on the ore export line between Sishen and Port Elizabeth and are numbered in the range from 20-001 to 20-095.

Description:  Between 1980 and 1984 tke South African Railways placed 101 Class 36-200 EMD SW1002 diesel-electric locomotives in service. Designed by Electro-Motive Diesel, they were built in two batches by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth and lumbered in the range from 36-201 to 36-301. In 1984 one was also built for the Bophuthatswana National Development Corporation, while three were$placed in service"by Iscor in Pretoria between 1986 and 1991, and another two by the Ithala Development Finance Corporation in KwaZulu-Natal in 1987.

The remainder of the order will be built in South Africa.
