Album Info:On 7 June 2007 a Piketberg bound coal train derailed at Biesiesfontein farm just north of Moorreesburg after floods caused the roadbed to subside. Five crew members were injured. Rain continued for several days and many of these pictures were taken on 9 June 2007 while the wreck crew was still battling to clear up the mess, badly hampered by the soggy conditions. Join me for a visit to the site....

Description:  Here the soggy conditions that the wrecking crew face can clearly be seen - note the mud submerged bogie to the right under the remains of the red wagon. The ground is so soggy that it's hard to walk, making it even harder for heavy machines to move around.

Description:  There's not much left of the cab of 35-408 after 35-403 (visible behind) ploughed into it during the accident. There were five crew members on board and all were injured, the worst having suffered a broken pelvis and broken ribs. Fortunately none of them were riding in 35-408, which was the second unit in the consist.
