Description:  In 1963 and 1964 the South African Railways placed one hundred and thirty Class 5E1, Series 2 electric locomotives in service, numbered in the range from E591 to E720. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers, it was built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by Associated Electrical Industries. These were the first electric locomotives to be built in South Africa in quantity and also the first mainline electric locomotives to be constructed locally.
