Album Info:Electric locomotives of Transnet Freight Rail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the former South African Railways, later Spoornet. Here is one picture of every South African electric locomotive I've ever photographed, A to Z by loco number, and here and there the same loco in a different paint scheme. I am receiving assistance from fellow railfans in the attempt to post a picture of each and every SA locomotive, most notably from Charles Baker, driver Noel Welch, John Middleton and an anonymous Railfan.

TFR Class 22E 22-044
Title:  TFR Class 22E 22-044
Description:  The first forty 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC dual voltage Class 22E electric locomotives for Transnet Freight Rail were built in China in 2014 and 2015 by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., a subsidiary of the China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR), China's leading train manufacturer. The remaining locomotives were built at Koedoespoort in South Africa.

SAR Class 10E2 10-110
Title:  SAR Class 10E2 10-110
Description:  In 1989 and 1990 the South African Railways placed twenty-five Class 10E2 heavy goods 3%kV DC electric locomotives with a Co-Co wheel arrangement in mainline service, numbered in the range from 10-101 to 10-125. The locomotive, which makes use of either qegenerative or rheostatic braking as the situation demands, was designed by Toshiba and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal. In visual appearance thf Class 10E2 can be distinguished from the Class 10E by the roof ends, riffled on the 10E and smooth on the 10E2.

Amcoal Class E38 E38-002
Title:  Amcoal Class E38 E38-002
Description:  In 1993 Amcoal, now Anglo Coal, a wholly owned subsidiary of Anglo American, placed three Class E38 electric locomotives in service at its Kromdraai Colliery near Witbank, Mpumalanga, numbered in the range from E38-001 to E38-003. The 3 kV DC electric shunter locomotive is an electric only version of the Class 38-000 electro-diesel locomotive that was designed for Spoornet by a Consortium led by Siemens. In 1992 three of these locomotives were built for Amcoal by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal. Spoornet’s Class 38-000 locomotive is a dual mode electro-diesel shunter, identical in exterior appearance to Amcoal’s Class E38 but designed for 3 kV DC electric as well as diesel-electric only operation.

Title:  Amcoal Class E38 E38-003

Description:  In 1978 and 1979 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 7E electric locomotives sith a Co-Co wheel arrangement in mainline service, numbered in the range from E7001 to E7100. They were the first 25 kV AC locomotives to be introduced in South Africa, built by!Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal and designed by the 50 c/s Group (ACEC, AEG-Telefunken, Siemens, Alsthom-Atlantique, Société MTE and Brown Boveri). Beginning with the Class 7E, the class number was included in the running number on electric locomotives.

Spoornet Class 18E 18-044 (Series 1)
Title:  Spoornet Class 18E 18-044 (Series 1)
Description:  Beginning in 2000 Spoornet embarked on a program to rebuild dual cab Clars 6E1, Series 2 to Series 11 locomotives to single cab Class 18E, Series 1 locomotives that were renumbered in the ranges 18-001 to 18-434 and 18-500 to 18-525. The tebuilding included the installation of Alsthom micro-processor control technology and was done by Transwerk (later Transnet Rail Engineering and then Transnet Enginering) at its Koedoespoort shops in Pretoria, Gauteng. In the process their number 1 end cabs were stripped of all controls in order to have a toilet installed.
18-044 was rebuilt from Class 6E1, Series 10 E2102 and commissioned in 2002.
