Viewing Album: South Africa's Rolling Stock - Passenger Mainline
By:
Col André Kritzinger
Dates:
6/6/2010 - 12/31/2020
Album Info:
Passenger coaches and other passenger train rolling stock used in mainline service. They are being shown here in four groups: the oldies with all wooden bodies, those with the later sheathed wooden bodies, the all metal group with peaked roofs, and then the all metal modern ones with smooth rounded roofs which I have arranged in three (arbitrary and unofficial) series. Blue Train and Phelophepa coaches and the cabooses are also included. .....oo..oo..oo..... With coaches and cabooses where the two sides are rarely identical, I treated the compartment/toilet side as Side A. With baggage cars and other coaches where the two sides are virtually identical, I treated the side on which the brake wheel is mounted to the right of centre, as Side B. .....oo..oo..oo..... Data Source: South African Railways, Types of Main Line Coaches, 1065mm/3'6" Gauge, by the Chief Mechanical Engineer's Drawing Office (Kindly supplied to me by Sue Lawrence in Australia).

Title:
SAR Wood Sleeper Coach (2nd Class, Side A)
Description:
This coach has an all wooden body with tapered roof peaks and an open balcony at each end. Some of them survived in service into the 1960's, and as a kid the balconies were my favourite spots to spend a train trip. To ensure a balanced load these coaches had a zig-zag passage, with the kink in the passage in the middle of the coach. The interior layout was, from end to end, a balcony, three six-bed compartments, a three-bed coupe, two toilets at the passage kink, a three-bed coupe, three six-bed compartments, and a balcony.SAR Type E-12, Built 1930-31, Number range 1497 to 1670, Length over headstocks 63' 0", Height 12' 5 7/16", Width 8' 9", To sleep 42.
